2017 is going to be a banner year for buying new video game consoles.
With the more powerful Xbox One coming late in the year, and a similar variant of the PlayStation 4 coming at some undetermined point in the near future, now isn't the best time to buy a new game system.
Even more interesting, however, is Nintendo's next game console: the NX.
We know next-to-nothing about the NX, but we do know the fantastic-looking "The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild" will launch simultaneously on Wii U and NX early next year. Yet, even without any knowledge of the NX, we can confidently say the NX version will be the one to buy.
This assertion is based on two things: a combination of what we've seen and common sense.
When we played the game on the Wii U, it was just a bit less sharp than what's on display in the trailer. The game is still a sight to behold, no doubt, but the Wii U demo seemingly struggled to keep up with the demands of the game on the Wii U hardware. The game is still in development, of course, and it's a massive game running on aging hardware.
Which brings us to common sense: the NX will be more powerful than the Wii U, so of course the game will look and run better on the NX. Nintendo insists Wii U and NX players will get the same experience. That may be true, but the NX version will undoubtedly look far better than its Wii U counterpart.
There's logic behind this, too: Games are often made by creating a gorgeous version that's not capable of running on standard home game consoles. That version is then "scaled down" to run on various game consoles. In the case of "Breath of the Wild," this is almost certainly the case given that it's being made for both the NX and the Wii U.
Nintendo is a savvy company that understands most people will play the better looking version of "Breath of the Wild."
The Wii U version makes almost no use of the unique features of the console's tablet-like GamePad controller from what we can tell. That means there might not be a great reason to play it on Wii U unless you already have one and you don't feel like buying a brand new console (which is totally understandable, of course).
Since it's statistically unlikely that anyone reading this owns a Wii U, we encourage you to hold off on buying one just to play "Breath of the Wild." Nintendo has promised a full reveal of the NX sometime later this year, so at least wait until then.
For now, enjoy the (still very pretty!) version of the new "Zelda" in a new trailer up.
