Barack Obama is about to mend one girl's broken heart as he visits the 50th state in the US on Friday.

Barack Obama mends a broken heart by visiting South Dakota

Until now the president had never been to South Dakota, prompting a 11-year-old named Rebecca to write to him.

"We are the warmest of the Dakotas, we have Mount Rushmore and when I just go to the park I sometimes see coyotes, hawks and bald eagles," she said.
"Please come visit us soon," she added, before signing off, "sadly Rebecca" next to a picture of a broken heart.

Not every US president has visited all 50 states during their time in office.

Bill Clinton did and George Bush Senior managed it, in just one term in power.
But Ronald Regan, George W Bush and Jimmy Carter all failed to make it around the whole country.

Obama went on KSFY-TV, a local television station to announce the trip, saying: "I can't let my South Dakota friends feel neglected."

South Dakota has a population of less than one million and tends to be very supportive of Republican politicians.

It is home to Mount Rushmore, a sculpture of four former presidents - George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln - which is carved into the rock face.
