Geek- Poké-fever has swept the nation thanks to the wildly popular Pokémon Go. With the mobile game soon coming to other countries, it is on the verge of becoming a worldwide phenomenon. Hollywood has taken notice and decided that now would be the perfect time to look into developing a live-action movie based around the nearly two-decades old franchise.
Hollywood wants to make a Pokémon movie
Legendary Pictures is thought to be moving forward to land a deal for the rights to a Pokémon movie. Deadline’s Fleming has reached out to both Legendary Pictures and Pokémon USA for a comment, but either they didn’t have any more details to share (Legendary), or didn’t return his calls (Pokémon USA). Despite the lack of any follow ups, we know that this movie is happening.
Rumors of a Pokémon movie have been circulating for years, with various studios trying to snatch up the property. One of the rumors even suggested that Legendary was close to sealing a deal. That particular rumor has turned out to be true, it seems. Legendary recently released the live-action Warcraft film. Though the film hasn’t done that great in the States, it has done exceptionally well in China — proving that Legendary has the capacity to create a successful live-action video game adaptation.
Pokémon has one of the more interesting and imaginative video game worlds out there so there is plenty of material the producers of the film can pull from. Again, it is still extremely early in the process to really discuss what Legendary’s plans are for the movie and any potential franchise, so stay tuned for any updates on this as it develops.
