“Doctor Zhivago,” the romanticized epic about the Russian Revolution, premiered in 1965 and it just screened in Cuba for the first time this week.

Cuban television channel plays 'Doctor Zhivago' for the first time

On Monday, the channel Cuba Visión played the Oscar-winning movie during the show Historia del Cine (History of Cinema), according to CubaNet.org, an independent news site covering the island.

A commentary by a noted cinephile Carlos Galiano followed the film. CubaNet.org reports that Galiano critiqued the film’s “ideological problems” – or its portrayal of the “Great October Socialist Revolution.”

Galiano called the film’s depiction of the revolution “anti-Soviet” Cold War propaganda, according to CubaNet.org.

Directed by David Lean, "Doctor Zhivago” is primarily a love story starring Omar Sharif, who plays the titular physician. The film won five Oscars, including Best Adapted Screenplay.

The movie is based on the 1957 novel by Boris Pasternak. It has never been released in Cuba.
