"I'm very busy", "the gym is very expensive", "my back hurts": any excuse is valid to avoid sports. But most of the time we are not aware that not exercising can have serious consequences on our well-being.

Being sedentary shortens your life seven years

What happens in the body after two weeks of sedentary lifestyle

Not doing physical activity multiplies the chances of developing hypertension, diabetes, depression. In addition, it increases the chances of developing breast cancer.

However, for most people, leading a sedentary lifestyle does not represent an additional risk to their well-being. We are all aware that cigarettes, alcohol or drugs can have a negative impact on our health but we are not when it comes to sports.

A study carried out by the Spanish Government and an insurer from that same country showed that at least 40 percent of the population of that country does not perform any physical activity and only 4 percent do it every day. This means that there is a 60 percent of Spaniards between 18 and 65 years of age who are overweight.

The research also showed that sedentary people live 7 years less than those who perform an appropriate physical activity because of the risks that this lifestyle entails for our health.

The sedentary profile

The same study also made the profile of the sedentary person and discovered that the middle-aged working woman is the most recognized as the protagonist of this lifestyle. This is because they are the ones who usually carry the work of the house and this reduces their time to play sports.

However, we must all be more careful with our health and make an effort so that all family members have time to exercise at least three times a week.
