The next time you sit down to breakfast do not underestimate that food or pass it to the races. If you consume less than 100 calories, you are seriously damaging your heart. Scientists at the National Center for Cardiovascular Research (CNIC) have just demonstrated that they make breakfast like a little bird double the risk of artery walls accumulating fats.
So serious is the thing that researchers suggest that skipping breakfast starts to be prominent on the list of unhealthy habits. Because if you practice sports, eat healthy and do not smoke but skip breakfast your efforts to lead a healthy life may lose meaning.
The study, published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology (JACC), confirms a repeated phrase: breakfast as a king, eat as a prince and dine as a beggar.
They have irrefutable evidence to make this claim. Recently, in the framework of the PESA CNIC-Santander study, they carried out an experiment with subjects with no history of cardiovascular disease and with different breakfast habits. Assisted by vascular ultrasound technology, the researchers thoroughly scanned the carotid, femoral, coronary, and aortic arteries for atherosclerotic plaques that did not show symptoms (subclinical atherosclerosis, in medical jargon). The analysis of the results was alarming: the ultrasound revealed that the number of atherosclerotic plaques was 1.5 times higher in the group that skipped breakfast to the bullfighter compared to those who started the day with a meal that contained more than 20% of daily calories.
Probability of more heart attacks
This is not the first time they have breakfast and heart health. If after a night without taking anything to your mouth you do not break the fast (that means etymologically 'de-fasting'), the probability that you suffer a heart attack increases by 27 percent.
In addition, dispensing with the first meal of the day causes blood lead levels to rise by 15 percent, according to the Environmental Health Journal.
The brain is also affected.
An experiment by the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing estimated that students skipping the first meal of the day reduced their verbal ability by 5.58 points, by 2.50 points, and the total score by 4.6 points. In addition they are slower and slower in solving problems.
