Scientists at Queen's University in Belfast, Ireland discovered that aspirin has great potential to reverse the effect of tooth decay on teeth.
During the investigation the team found that the drug composed of acetylsalicylic acid can stimulate the stem cells of the teeth for their regeneration, even in cavities.
The teeth have a natural regenerative capacity because they can produce a small layer of dentin when the dental pulp is exposed.
Ikhlas El Karim, a professor at the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Biomedical Sciences at the university, discovered that acetylsalicylic acid can enhance the function of stem cells and thus contribute to self-repair of tooth structures.
According to the findings of El Karim presented at the annual conference of the British Society for Oral and Dental Research, in the future there may be no need for cures and amalgams to fill the cavities caused by decay.
