(Pugtips.com) No real Pug fanatic can go on living without knowing some interesting Pug facts and trivia. For that reason I put together a list of some interesting pug facts that not too many people may know. So without further ado, here is my list of 14 interesting Pug facts:

14 facts about pugs

1 Pugs Originated from China – Although their original birthplace was in China, they traveled and captured our hearts around the world. If I didn’t know any better, I would have guessed that they are planning a global takeover of cuteness.

2 They are the official dog of the House of Orange – After a heroic Pug called Pompey saved the life of a prince, the breed became the dog of choice by the House of Orange-Nassau dynasty.

3 They are brachycephalic – Here is a new word for you to learn. It just basically means that the head is broad but short which results in the smushed face appearance that pugs are well known for.

4 Pugs were once used by the military – Now I know it’s tough to imagine these little guys in battle, but they were actually pretty good at tracking things. During the 17th century it wasn’t uncommon for them to be on guard duty or used as tracking dogs to find people and/or other animals.

5 The AKC Officially recognized the breed in 1895 – Although these guys have been popular for centuries around the world, the American Kennel Club didn’t officially recognize them until 1895. But then again, the club didn’t exist until 1984 so it’s not too surprising that it took that long.

6 A Pack of Pugs is called a Grumble – If you ever see a group of Pugs running together, you better move out the way because no one stands a chance against the Grumble Bundle.

7 German name for Pugs is Mops – I can’t even count the amount of jokes that can be made with this little fact, but I’ll spare you of my terrible humor. Instead you can add your own in the comments section.

8 Chinese name for Pugs is Lo-Sze – Good luck trying to pronounce that one correctly. I’m not going to even try. I’ll just end up embarrassing myself.

9 Their wrinkly faces need to be cleaned regularly – Although those wrinkly faces are really adorable, they do require a bit of maintenance. You have to clean between the wrinkles regularly to prevent infection and bacterial growth.

10 Pugs are celebrities – well not really, but there are a ton of celebrities that have pugs of their own. Just a few examples include Jessica Alba, Gerard Butler, Robin Williams, Kid Rock, Brix Smith, Dave Ramsey, Hugh Laurie and even Queen Victoria. There are a lot more examples, too many to list in fact.

11 Pugs have starred in several movies – Well I guess this really does make them celebrities then. These little guys made into films such as “The Adventures of Milo and Otis”, “Men in Black”, “Pocahontas”, “Hotel for Dogs” and many others.

12 Pug average running speed is around 3-5mph – These guys are just not that quick unfortunately and they get tired easily. So if you’re looking for a dog that you can take on your morning jogs, this breed is probably not for you.

13 Pugs were the chosen symbol for the Order of the Pug – Order of the pug was a Freemasonry lodge that was formed after the Catholic Church banned Freemasonry. Apparently they picked for their symbol because these dogs are considered to be loyal and trustworthy.

14 Pugs are considered to be a toy breed – Since these little guys are so small in size compared most of the other dog breeds, they are classified as a toy breed.

Pug are amazing and lovely pets. How many of these facts did you already know? Did I miss any other interesting facts with this list?
